25 Wishful Thinking

Self-interest often leads us to refuse to look for evidence that we don't want to face. Ostrich-like, we ignore the facts. On wishful thinking we build false expectations. When these are disappointed, we may have a rude awakening.

EXAMPLE COMMENT
On a balmy spring day Salesman Peter wearies of soliciting prospects. "There are lots of good contacts to make at the golf links, and besides I need a rest," reflects Peter. He takes the afternoon off. Let Peter not wonder if his sales drop.
Caesar relates in his Commentaries how a Gallic tribe accepted a wild rumor to the effect that the Roman army had been destroyed and how they poured down pell mell on the Roman camp. "People believe what they want to believe," noted Caesar. Rationalizing isn't new. It was the Gauls who met destruction.
