The present edition of Mill's Representative Government is based upon the third edition (1865). Some slight modifications have been made in spelling and punctuation to conform to preferred current usage without significantly affecting Mill's style. Footnotes, within brackets, and a biographical index have been added by the publisher's editorial staff to aid the reader.
