Dear Annette:

Thank you for your letter which I shall study carefully. An immediate reaction, however. I am surprised that memory tells you that I would explicate

Jones fears x, as (a) φ
in terms of the mere conjunction
Jones fears x and believes x to be (a) φ
I did wish to bring in such forms as 'Jones believes x to be (a) φ' 'Jones believes that x is (a) φ' 'Jones believes of x that it is (a) φ' -- which depending on which problem we are focussfng on, but I am quite sure that I emphasized that the belief not only accompanies the fear, but is the explanation of the fear. Roughly,
Jones fears x, because he believes x to be (a) φ.
I shall look to see if this misunderstanding plays a key role in your critique.

Cordially,

Wilfrid
