Jones fears x, as (a) φin terms of the mere conjunctionJones fears x and believes x to be (a) φI did wish to bring in such forms as 'Jones believes x to be (a) φ' 'Jones believes that x is (a) φ' 'Jones believes of x that it is (a) φ' -- which depending on which problem we are focussfng on, but I am quite sure that I emphasized that the belief not only accompanies the fear, but is the explanation of the fear.
