Opposite page, above right: Wilfrid in the Botanical Gardens outside Tucson, Arizona, c. 1977. This is Wilfrid's "worldbeater" pose. I first witnessed it in Curacao, in the casino (there is nothing else to do in Curacao in the evenings), in 1972. We had just entered the lobby of the casino, where the slot machines were, and Wilfrid, who believed he was lucky, walked up to the nearest slot machine, put in one quarter and pulled the handle, and Bingo!, he had hit a $400 jackpot. While the quarters were tumbling noisily out, Wilfrid stood there, in full worldbeater pose, as much as to say, "Of course I hit the jackpot, I am that I am, and I am LUCKY."

Photos on this page by Susanna. The amaryllis was one of Wilfrid's favorite flowers. We kept them on the windowsill looking out into the garden room, so that Wilfrid could enjoy them while he was sitting on his couch. He died facing this window. The fish inhabited the 500 gallon pool that ran along one wall o the garden room. Wilfrid's job was feeding the fish. The big ones are Koi, type of Japanese carp, and the smaller ones are goldfish. -
